Attendance Policy
THE FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY

It is very important to make every effort to be in class everyday. Absent students must bring a note signed by their parent to the Attendance Office at 7:00a.m. Teachers will not allow students into class without an absence slip (PRC).

ATTENDANCE

Students will be limited to 15 absences per semester or privileges will be withdrawn. This includes all absences—excused, unexcused, school activities, and at this time, will include record room absences only. The consequences of absences are as follows:

  • 5 ABSENCES : A letter sent home to parent; student-parent conference; if ill for five consecutive days, student must have a note from a doctor.
  • 10 ABSENCES : Student-Parent conference; students will be excluded from attending any event requiring clearance, including the prom; all students will be assigned community service.
  • 15 ABSENCES: Suspension from school, parent conference; seniors will not be allowed to graduate on stage; underclassmen will not be allowed to participate in pin ceremonies or in academic ceremonies.
TARDY CONSEQUENCES

  • Tardy excused to Record Room through period 6: Personal phone call for verification and warning. Three excused notes maximum per semester shall be accepted.
  • First Tardy not excused : Phone call home or letter home to parent.
  • Second Tardy not excused : Phone call home and follow-up letter sent home.
  • Third Tardy not excused : Student must serve two hours of Saturday community service.
  • Fourth Tardy not excused: One-day in-house suspension and parent conference.
  • Fifth Tardy not excused: Student will be placed under consideration for a transfer to another school.
TRUANCY CONSEQUENCES

  • First Truancy: Conference with student by counselor; phone contact with parent; issue community service paper pick-up.
  • Second Truancy: Conference with student by administrator; phone contact with parent; issue community service.
  • Third Truancy: Two in-house suspension, conference with parent; copy of policy to parent.
  • Fourth Truancy: Two day in-house suspension; contract signed by parent.
  • Fifth Truancy: Student will be placed under consideration for a transfer to another school.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

8:00 to 10:00a.m. Please make sure you report to Mr. Chui and sign in. If you don't report you will be assigned 10 hours of community service and 1 week (3:15-5:15) in the tutoring room after school.

A letter is to be signed and returned to the tardy room the next day. If you do not return the letter the next day, you will be assigned 2hrs. of community service.

CREDIT REQUIREMNETS FOR THE CLASS OF 2005 AND BEYOND

9 th and 10 th Grade . . . . . . . . 55 Credits

10 th and 11 th Grade . . . . . . . 110 Credits

11 th and 12 th Grade . . . . . . . 170 Credits

Total credits necessary to graduate: 230

In order to receive a high school diploma from the Los Angeles Unified School District , a student must pass all the basic required courses and earn a total of 230 credits. In addition, the State Department of Education has mandated a high school exit exam as a graduation requirement for the class of 2006

Elective Courses:

Elective courses broaden students' experiences. They are designed to provide a more complete curricular program of concept acquisition, subject matter, competence, skill development, or enrichment.

They may be used for partial fulfillment of academic requirements to universities, related experiences, enrichment, interest and diverse se1ected areas, development of useful life skills, further competence in a special interest area, or acquisition of an entry-level job skill.

The decision to offer an elective course will be based upon student and parent interest, expertise of the teaching staff, and availability of teaching stations.

Visual/Performing Arts and Applied Technology Requirements

To graduate, one must demonstrate computer literacy through at least one class. Business, computers, home economics, and industrial arts fulfill the technical arts requirements.

In grades 9-12, it is required that students take a year of visual/performing arts and a year of applied technology. A full year of music, art, or drama fulfills the fine arts requirement.

CAHSEE—CST

All students graduating in 2006, and after, need to take, and pass, the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). In order to graduate on stage, all students must take the CST every year.

Service Learning

Students must prove that they have undergone all approved Service Learning orientation and experience toward graduation beginning with the Class of 2007. To learn more about Service Learning click here.
